High-performing local school shows why families are attracted to South Woodham Ferrers - BalgoresOur news

The main secondary school in the small Essex town of South Woodham Ferrers has come in for significant praise following a brilliant set of A-level results.

Staff and students at William de Ferrers School were left in celebratory mode as over 95% of students secured A*-E grades at A-level, while more than 54% of all students were awarded A*-B grades, or the equivalent.

While all departments of the school were left delighted with the performance of the students, results were particularly strong for English, drama, media studies and further mathematics. In fact, 100% of students achieved A*-B grades in further mathematics, while 67% of A-level English students achieved A*-B grades and an impressive 93% achieved A*-C grades.

In media studies, students saw results of 71% A*-B, while drama students achieved 62% A*-B.

“These fantastic results are a reflection of the tireless work and motivation of our highly driven students,” a spokesman for the school said. “At a time when examination specifications have undergone significant change, we are very proud of both our students and our committed staff today.”

Great family homes in a quiet Essex town

With a population of around 16,500, South Woodham Ferrers might not be as well-known as near neighbours Basildon and Chelmsford, but it has plenty going for it in terms of family living.

As well as William de Ferrers School, it plays host to a number of well-respected primaries and an array of family-friendly houses. These range from impressive five and four bed detached houses to reasonably priced semi-detached properties close to the station, shops and local schools.

There are also bungalows, townhouses, end of terrace properties and stylish, spacious apartments and one or two bed flats on offer, as well as studio flats and apartments for those with a lower budget.

Most homes are aimed at families, eager to take advantage of the town’s solid transport links and easy access to good local schools, amenities and green space. London Liverpool Street is a 52 minute train journey away (with one change at Wickford), while Chelmsford and Basildon can both be reached by car in around 20 minutes.

Southend-on-Sea, with its airport and seaside grandeur, is a 30 minute drive away, and other, quieter parts of the coast can be reached with ease. The Essex countryside is also right on the doorstep, providing all manner of leisure opportunities.

The family-friendly vibe is further shown by the number of kid-friendly activities on offer in and around the town – with Marsh Farm Animal Adventure Park, Cheeky Monkeez and Creepy Crawlies soft play centre all popular among the little ones. For older children, there’s Saltcoats Park – home to South Woodham Ferrers Rugby Union Football Club and their array of teams, from U-6s to U-16s – which provides a range of outdoor facilities, including grass sports pitches, an outdoor gym, two children’s play areas, a sports pavilion and a skateboard park.

Families can keep well stocked up at the town’s Asda Superstore, while a range of cafes, restaurants, shops, pubs and bars will keep the fussiest eaters, drinkers and shoppers happy.

Selling in South Woodham Ferrers

Your chances of selling, especially if you are selling a family home, should be good. Demand is likely to be high – helped further by the recent excellent results for the local secondary school, which could help to attract more parents to the area.

The town, which currently has an overall average price of £320,791 (Rightmove), has seen sold prices grow by 4% in the last year and are up 20% on 2015.

The ripple effect is no doubt playing a part – with those priced out of London seeking more affordable homes elsewhere – but the area’s popularity among family buyers could also be playing a role in driving price growth.

Of course, to get your home sold, it needs to look the part and receive the exposure it deserves. Work with your agent to give your property the best chance of selling, from getting your marketing material spot-on to targeting the right kind of buyers for your home.
