Considering a move to Basildon? You couldn’t have timed it better
Basildon is a town that is going places, and 2019 could be the perfect time to make it your new home.
Run through a checklist of everything you want in a home town and Basildon seems to have it all. Good traffic infrastructure, great commuter links into London, a busy and bustling town centre, great local nightlife and the green and pleasant Essex countryside right on the doorstep.
On top of all that, property prices are highly affordable, and significantly lower than other nearby Essex towns such as Brentwood or Chelmsford. As such, you would expect people to be hammering the doors down at Basildon estate agents, wanting to get a piece of the action.
Put that question to those who have lived in Essex all their lives, and you will get the vague and unhelpful answer “Well, it’s Basildon.” Like so many of the other new towns that sprung up in the post war years, Basildon went through something of a decline in the 1970s and 80s, and despite the regeneration and investment that has been ploughed into the town over the past 20 years, these perceptions can be hard to shift.
Others see the Hollywood-style town sign and assume they are entering the heartland of the Essex portrayed in TV shows like The Only Way is Essex. The truth is that there is far more to this part of Essex than white stilettos and boy racers in hot hatches.
Those who hark back to the 70s and 80s would not have great memories of the shopping options in the town. Today, however, the Eastgate Centre is everything you could want from a shopping mall. Modern, airy and with free WiFi throughout, more than 100 retailers can be found here, along with a range of eateries, coffee shops, banks and so on. Eastgate has brought a real sense of vitality back to central Basildon that was lacking in the late 20th century.
Festival Leisure, known affectionately as Bas Vegas, is a hot spot for those wanting to let their hair down on a Friday or Saturday night. As well as the Unit 7 nightclub, the facility has 15 restaurants, a bowling alley, a 16-screen cinema and various play facilities for the children. There is definitely something for everyone!
For those who truly know Basildon as it is today, it is a source of constant amazement that the town is consistently ranked the cheapest commuter town in south east England. Where else can you think of that is just a 35 minute train ride to London where you can still get a one-bedroom flat for around £150,000 or a three-bedroom house for £250,000? If the rumours are correct, prices could drop even further in the weeks around Brexit, so there really is no better time than now to take a look at what is available and find your very own piece of Basildon real estate.
